What you should know about Bankstown Bushwalking Club Inc.

We are a bushwalking club that is also involved in canyoning, caving, abseiling, cycling and a variety of other activities. All new walkers to the club and beginners are required to contact the leader of an activity 48 hours before the start of the activity. If you want to do an abseil trip, canyon or cave you will need to attend an abseil practice day first so that we can check your skills out. You will find the date of the next practice day on the current program. If you haven't bushwalked before we recommend that you start with an easy walk, in our club grading system, grade 1 or 2. If you have bushwalked before then a grade 3 walk may be suitable. You will find details of the walk grades here. You will find that each walk has a grade. You will need to wear lace-up shoes with good tread on the soles. Walking tracks often have uneven surfaces and you may need to cross creeks or do some climbing or scrambling. Therefore you will need to take enough food and water for a full day of activity on each walk. Following a walk we often stop at a coffee shop or pub for refreshments before heading home, but it is unlikely that there will be anywhere you will be able to stock up on food or other supplies before then. Please note that most walks are in fairly remote areas where there may not be any toilet facilities or mobile phone access. Your walk leader will be able to tell you how long the drive will be when you ring up to register your interest in the walk. Most of our day and weekend walking is within 2 hours drive from sydney. Our club walks in many locations. About doing our walks. They need to be satisfied that you are sufficiently fit and able to complete the activity as intended, and have the right to exclude you from any activity.

In addition all participants share responsibility (or must be prepared to) or the good and neat conduct and safety of any club activity in which they participate. A club member or members coordinates each of the activities on the club program. The activity leaders may determine who they include in the walk or other activity. They need to assess the fitness, experience and skills of each participant on a walk or other activity and only take those who are capable to whole the activity safely as a peer. They also need to consider the size of the group and combine of abilities and experience within the group to make sure the group will have a safe and enjoyable trip and may deposit limits on the number of participants on any walk or activity. They need to ensure that they have an appropriate combine of skills and experience within the group. The Walks Committee feels it is important that we yield adequate information about a walk to permit you to make an informed decision. The descriptions lower relate to difficulty, time and distance and therefore apply equally to a day walk or backpack. What to receive on an Overnight Walk On an overnight walk you need to receive all the gear you would normally receive on a day walk plus tent, cooking gear, food etc, The list of gear below is only indicative. Club abseil gear can be old on the first trip or two, but after that members MUST have their own gear. When canyoning you usually carry the identical gear as you would for a normal day walk. Party to carry appropriate combine of ropes and tapes (also pulleys and spare equipment at the activity leader's discretion in case of emergencies). Some hazards to be aware of are: You need to be fit and have some climbing skills or ability, as most caves involve a lot of free (unbelayed) climbing. Any financial member of the club is qualified to put activities on the program using the process and guidelines below. Members of the social and abseil committees also attend this meeting to assist coordinate the timing of programmed activities and, in the case of abseil trips, to ensure that the person leading the activity has the right smooth of skills to organism the trip.
